Jenya Urikas - Priestess of St Cuthbert

Jenya is the acting high priest for the church of St Cuthbert in Cauldron. In the wake of the kidnappings and especially after the abductions of four orphans from the Lantern Street Orphanage, she has publically vowed to locate the missing children and bring the kidnappers to justice.

Jenya stands 5'4" tall with premature streaks of gray in her rich brown hair. She acted decisively after the most recent abductions by using one of the churches most powerful relics, the Star of Justice, to cast a divination and then send one of her acolytes (Heoldon) to investigate the orphanage.

The church of St. Cuthbert is a two-story structure constructed of blue veined marble. The construction sticks out in stark contrast to the other buildings along Obsidian Avenue which are constructed of bare black stone. A pair of white marble statues depicting armored warriors stand to either side of the temple's heavy wooden door. Each of the statues raises a great mace to the sky and above the door's marble architrave is inscribed the following: "Within Law lives Hope."

Trouble with the Last Laugh

12th of Patchwall, Waterday 586 CY

It wasn't long after arriving from Sasserine that our heroes encountered trouble. Shouts of anger and the sounds of a scuffle brought them to a dim alley as the last rays of the sun dipped below Cauldron's obsidian walls.

The rain that had started when they entered the city intensified as Sicarus the rogue, crept to the alley -- back against a neighboring building. He saw three toughs wearing dark clothes and faces painted up with the black and white of a harelequin's smile; they were attacking an acolyte of St Cuthbert.

As Sicarus brandished a rapier, the thug closest to him was struck broadside by the cleric's huge maul which caused him to stumble back. The opening was just enough for the rogue to slip his rapier between the ribs on his left side and the faux harlequin collapsed to the ground.

The final two thugs seeing their companion fall took to their heels after the cleric finally sucumbed from a brutal short sword slash to the back. Just arriving at the entrance to the alley Saydi the wild elf, with an arcane shout unleashed a blue bolt of force that struck one of the thugs as he fled into the wet gloom of dusk.

Our heroes found out from an onlooker where the temple of St Cuthbert stood and quickly sought healing for the unconcious cleric. After some healing administered within the white marbled church, Heoldon acolyte of St Cuthbert, introduced himself and related that he had been on a mission to investigate the recent abductions from a local orphanage.

Jenya Urikas the acting high priestess of the temple gave her heart felt thanks to the heroes for helping Heoldon but was now more concerned than ever about the recent rash of kidnappings. With the high priest gone to Sasserine she felt there was no recourse but to use one of the temples greatest artifacts to divine the location of the missing children.

She handed them the hand written response to her divination and asked the heroes if they would be willing to help Heoldon get to the bottom of the mystery. With the local thieve's guild, the Last Laugh, entering the picture there was little doubt that one accolyte couldn't handle the investigation by himself.

Accepting their new mission the heroes recieved a token of thanks from Jenya each receiving a cure potion bearing the symbol of St Cuthbert. Leaving the temple, Heoldon guided his new companions to the only decent inn in Cauldron, the Drunken Morkoth. Settling in at the inn Sicarus did his best to gather information from the locals and they made plans to meet in the morning to begin their investigation.

Cauldron

Cauldron (large town) Conventional; AL NG; Population 7,500 adults; 9,000 gp limit; Assets 3,625,000 gp; Mixed (84% human, 5% gnome, 4% halfling, 3% dwarf, 2% elf, 1% half-elf, <1% other)

Cauldron is a large settlement in the extinct caldera of a volcano. The city is elevated above a subtropical jungle which surrounds the human enclaves of the area. The relatively high altitude of the city proper is the only thing that allows the higher temperatures of the surrounding region to abate, keeping the region's largest settlement mostly temperate. In addition to Cauldron (a town of about 7,500 adults), the settlements of Kingfisher Hollow (large village of 2100), Redgorge (village of 600), and Hollowsky (village of 450) are bastions of the civilized races.

Cauldron is located in the Hellfurnace Mountains, just south of Jeklea Bay in the southwestern area of the Flaeness. The nearest real city is the free city of Sasserine, several days ride to the north. Sasserine acts as a jumping off point for expeditions into the Amedio Jungle (the area around Cauldron) and the Sea of Dust. Sasserine and Cauldron form a very loose economic partnership; with little more than light taxation ensuring that Sasserine's military patrols the major roads.

Like the peoples of the area, the religions followed in the region are practical. Cauldron boasts temples to St. Cuthbert, Kord, Wee Jas, and Pelor. A shrine to Fharlanghn resides in a roadhouse called the Lucky Monkey, on the way to Sasserine. Kingfisher Hollow has small shrines to Pelor, Yondalla, and Wee Jas, while Redgorge has small houses of worship for Kord, Moradin, and Garl Glittergold. Clerics from the elven pantheons are fairly rare in these parts, as are followers of Boccob and Obad-Hai.
